The 4 Biggest Mistakes Moms Make When Starting a Business

(and How to Skip Them!)

Hey, mama! 👋 You’re dreaming of starting your own business, right? Maybe you’re knee-deep in brainstorming, maybe you’ve already launched, or maybe you’re just feeling a bit
stuck. Sound familiar? Guess what? You’re SO not alone. I’ve been there too, and I know firsthand that this mompreneur journey isn’t just about building something amazing—it’s also about juggling family, work, and life’s curveballs all at once.

Today, I’m going to walk you through the biggest mistakes moms make when starting a business—mistakes I wish someone had warned me about! And, more importantly, I’ll show you how to dodge these pitfalls. You’re on the edge of something incredible, and I want you to be ready to crush it. Let’s dive in!

Mistake 1: Choosing the Wrong Business Model

We all get excited when we see other moms or entrepreneurs thriving with a certain business model, whether that’s 1:1 coaching, selling courses, or running a membership. It’s easy to think, “If it works for her, it’ll work for me too!” But here’s the truth: not all business models fit every lifestyle—especially the busy mom life!

As a mom, your time is precious, and some business models require A LOT of it. For example, 1:1 coaching is super rewarding, but it’s also very time-intensive, which might not work well when you’re managing school runs, family dinners, and the occasional meltdown. A model like online courses or memberships might fit better—where you can build something once, refine it, and then let it keep generating income without you having to be glued to your laptop.

My Own “Shiny Object” Experience
When I first started, I tried to do it all—coaching, consulting, content creation, sales, you name it. My life looked like a game of whack-a-mole, juggling every single task. I was exhausted. And I fell into the “shiny object” trap—doing what others were doing instead of what was right for me. It wasn’t until I found the digital business model that truly fit my life that things started to flow (and I felt like I could finally breathe!). So, here’s my tip: find what lights you up and works for your life, not someone else’s.

Mistake 2: Not Validating Your Idea First

Oh, mama, this one is huge. I get it—you’ve got an amazing idea, you’re hyped, and you just want to run with it. But hold up! Just because you’re excited about your idea doesn’t mean everyone else will be. 😅

Before you pour time and energy into building a course, product, or service, you need to make sure people actually want it. A quick reality check can save you SO much time and frustration. Start by creating a quick survey, posting a poll in a Facebook group, or even pre-selling the idea to see if it gets a reaction. That way, you know your idea has legs before you spend months building it.

Why Validation and Messaging Matter
I’ve seen so many moms create beautiful courses and services
only to launch them and hear crickets. Why? Because they skipped one crucial step: asking, “Does my audience actually want this?” Validation is about making sure there’s a real need for your idea, while messaging is about making them feel like you understand exactly what they’re looking for. Skip either one, and you could miss out on a successful launch—even with a great product!

Mistake 3: Trying to Do It All Alone

Let’s get real—moms are superheroes. đŸ’Ș But even superheroes need a team. Many of us feel like we have to do everything ourselves, but that mindset is a one-way ticket to burnout. Building a business and raising a family is no small feat, and trying to handle it all alone can leave you feeling overwhelmed.

Here’s the truth: you need support. Whether that’s outsourcing tasks like social media, finding a mentor, or connecting with other mompreneurs who get it, you don’t have to do this alone. Once you realize that, your business (and your sanity) will start to thrive.

My Personal “I Can Do It All” Journey
When I started, I thought asking for help meant I wasn’t doing enough. But I learned that letting go of certain tasks—like tech headaches and admin stuff—freed me up to focus on the things that actually mattered for my growth. I got mentors, joined a community of other mompreneurs, and finally stopped feeling like a one-woman show. It made all the difference.

Mistake 4: Not Having a Time Management Plan

Time management is no joke, mama. Between the endless to-do list, kid activities, and the daily demands of life, running a business can feel like putting out fires all day. But here’s a secret: time management isn’t about working harder—it’s about working smarter.

If you only have 2-3 hours of focused work time each day, use it wisely! Make a plan that allows you to prioritize high-impact tasks like content creation, marketing, or client work, rather than checking emails or scrolling social media.

How I Make It Work
Time management has become one of my favorite topics because, trust me, it’s taken years to figure out a system that works. Kids grow, schedules change—so my plan has to be flexible, but it still gives me structure. What’s worked best for me is creating workflows. I batch content on one day, follow up with clients another day, and set weekly goals that fit into my life as it is now. This way, I’m not constantly feeling behind, and I know exactly what to focus on each day.
