(and How to Skip Them!)
Hey, mama! đ Youâre dreaming of starting your own business, right? Maybe youâre knee-deep in brainstorming, maybe youâve already launched, or maybe youâre just feeling a bit⊠stuck. Sound familiar? Guess what? Youâre SO not alone. Iâve been there too, and I know firsthand that this mompreneur journey isnât just about building something amazingâitâs also about juggling family, work, and lifeâs curveballs all at once.
Today, Iâm going to walk you through the biggest mistakes moms make when starting a businessâmistakes I wish someone had warned me about! And, more importantly, Iâll show you how to dodge these pitfalls. Youâre on the edge of something incredible, and I want you to be ready to crush it. Letâs dive in!
Mistake 1: Choosing the Wrong Business Model
We all get excited when we see other moms or entrepreneurs thriving with a certain business model, whether thatâs 1:1 coaching, selling courses, or running a membership. Itâs easy to think, âIf it works for her, itâll work for me too!â But hereâs the truth: not all business models fit every lifestyleâespecially the busy mom life!
As a mom, your time is precious, and some business models require A LOT of it. For example, 1:1 coaching is super rewarding, but itâs also very time-intensive, which might not work well when youâre managing school runs, family dinners, and the occasional meltdown. A model like online courses or memberships might fit betterâwhere you can build something once, refine it, and then let it keep generating income without you having to be glued to your laptop.
My Own âShiny Objectâ Experience
When I first started, I tried to do it allâcoaching, consulting, content creation, sales, you name it. My life looked like a game of whack-a-mole, juggling every single task. I was exhausted. And I fell into the âshiny objectâ trapâdoing what others were doing instead of what was right for me. It wasnât until I found the digital business model that truly fit my life that things started to flow (and I felt like I could finally breathe!). So, hereâs my tip: find what lights you up and works for your life, not someone elseâs.
Mistake 2: Not Validating Your Idea First
Oh, mama, this one is huge. I get itâyouâve got an amazing idea, youâre hyped, and you just want to run with it. But hold up! Just because youâre excited about your idea doesnât mean everyone else will be. đ
Before you pour time and energy into building a course, product, or service, you need to make sure people actually want it. A quick reality check can save you SO much time and frustration. Start by creating a quick survey, posting a poll in a Facebook group, or even pre-selling the idea to see if it gets a reaction. That way, you know your idea has legs before you spend months building it.
Why Validation and Messaging Matter
Iâve seen so many moms create beautiful courses and services⊠only to launch them and hear crickets. Why? Because they skipped one crucial step: asking, âDoes my audience actually want this?â Validation is about making sure thereâs a real need for your idea, while messaging is about making them feel like you understand exactly what theyâre looking for. Skip either one, and you could miss out on a successful launchâeven with a great product!
Mistake 3: Trying to Do It All Alone
Letâs get realâmoms are superheroes. đȘ But even superheroes need a team. Many of us feel like we have to do everything ourselves, but that mindset is a one-way ticket to burnout. Building a business and raising a family is no small feat, and trying to handle it all alone can leave you feeling overwhelmed.
Hereâs the truth: you need support. Whether thatâs outsourcing tasks like social media, finding a mentor, or connecting with other mompreneurs who get it, you donât have to do this alone. Once you realize that, your business (and your sanity) will start to thrive.
My Personal âI Can Do It Allâ Journey
When I started, I thought asking for help meant I wasnât doing enough. But I learned that letting go of certain tasksâlike tech headaches and admin stuffâfreed me up to focus on the things that actually mattered for my growth. I got mentors, joined a community of other mompreneurs, and finally stopped feeling like a one-woman show. It made all the difference.
Mistake 4: Not Having a Time Management Plan
Time management is no joke, mama. Between the endless to-do list, kid activities, and the daily demands of life, running a business can feel like putting out fires all day. But hereâs a secret: time management isnât about working harderâitâs about working smarter.
If you only have 2-3 hours of focused work time each day, use it wisely! Make a plan that allows you to prioritize high-impact tasks like content creation, marketing, or client work, rather than checking emails or scrolling social media.
How I Make It Work
Time management has become one of my favorite topics because, trust me, itâs taken years to figure out a system that works. Kids grow, schedules changeâso my plan has to be flexible, but it still gives me structure. Whatâs worked best for me is creating workflows. I batch content on one day, follow up with clients another day, and set weekly goals that fit into my life as it is now. This way, Iâm not constantly feeling behind, and I know exactly what to focus on each day.
